A Recent Interview with Laura Lindsay

May 6, 2025

A portrait of Laura Lindsay

Some addiction treatment centers are impersonal and detached, but that isn’t true of B&L Medical Group. Our founder – nurse Laura Lindsay – is very open and loves to discuss her work! In fact, she recently did an interview with the online magazine VoyageKC for one of their local stories. This talk covers how she started B&L Medical Group, her journey as a nurse practitioner, and more.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

I had been searching for meaning in my career as a nurse then nurse practitioner since I started this journey many years ago. I have always loved being a nurse and helping others at all times. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore many different nursing paths including ortho/neuro/trauma, emergency/urgent care, family practice, and opioid addiction.

I was seeking more fulfillment from my career and wanted to use my nursing/business backgrounds and experiences to directly impact our loved ones, our kids, our neighbors, our colleagues, our city, and anyone else that is facing any part of the ongoing and worsening opioid crisis. I have unfortunately lived through trauma in my own life due an alcohol related incident and have always wanted to pay it forward after receiving unconditional love and support to keep moving forward. I am forever grateful for the support I had at the lowest point in my own life. My goal everyday is to give all of my support to patients in achieving sobriety and maintaining recovery with alcohol and opioid addictions.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

The road has not been smooth but I would not change a thing. I have learned so much about so many moving parts of the entire business including accepting insurance to be more affordable for patients, best marketing practices, constantly researching and studying the most up to date practices, moving from a manual paper chart process to a full fledge electronic medical record, always networking, and seeking out the best resources to give to patients. I remind myself often, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. I definitely ran into some obstacles in the beginning when starting my own business, but with patience and perseverance, I kept my mind on what I was passionate about and did not let anything stop me, even a few hard no’s here and there.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

I am a certified family nurse practitioner providing medication assisted treatment and consulting services through my business, B&L Medical Group, LLC. I have spent the past few years building my business and networking with the best resources for my patients not only in the Kansas City area but also some nationwide inpatient substance abuse treatment facilities. In addition to prescribing and administering lifesaving and changing medications for my patients (Suboxone, Sublocade, Vivitrol, and Brixadi), I work side by side with my patients every day to achieve their goals for recovery. I am most proud of the last year and where I started and where I am now. I offer an extremely personalized patient/provider relationship. Patients know it’s just me right now and if they are comfortable texting me, they know I do not mind. But they also know they get great follow-up, a plethora of resources if they want, and access to their provider who truly cares.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?

In the past, there was a huge stigma on Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). I have seen that start to diminish but I strive every day to educate as many people as I possibly can that there are widely accepted FDA approved medications and treatments available. I truly believe that when it comes to opioid and alcohol addiction, MAT treatment along with behavioral health/cognitive therapy can save and change lives for the long term.
